RECOMMENDED

  • The location of signs on commercial buildings should conform with the traditional placement of signs on such buildings.
  • The size, scale, color, shape, and graphics of commercial signs should be compatible with the building and the surrounding area.
  • Lighting should be subtle and be compatible with the historic character of the district.
  • Signs which identify home occupations should be:
    • Identification only (not advertising)
    • Small
    • Designed to be read at the entrance rather than from the street
    • Discreetly mounted against the building
  • Signs should comply with all applicable ordinances and regulations.

NOT RECOMMENDED

  • Avoid internally lit signs.
  • Avoid freestanding signs, especially in residential areas.
  • Billboards are not appropriate anywhere in the district.
  • Signs identifying a home occupation, historic information, or neighborhood association membership should not:
    • Be individually lit
    • Be freestanding
    • Constitute advertising
    • Avoid concealing architectural details with signage.
    • Signs which have a negative impact on surrounding residential buildings should not be considered.
