What’s happening in May in Herron-Morton?
What do the Mario Brothers, Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon, children gleefully playing in the streets, beer, and tricycles all have in common? Here’s a hint: It has something to do with the most anticipated racing event in Indianapolis history!
Still no answer? They were all associated with the Herron-Morton Place 500 trike race in 2021 (aka HMP500)! You missed it?! Then it’s your lucky day because the 3rd annual HMP500 is happening again in 2022!
Beginning at noon on May 21st (this month), North New Jersey St. will be barricaded off between 20th and 22nd streets for the third-annual HMP 500 event, a family-friendly-day of highly competitive drift-trike racing. Come see kids and adults jockeying to take home the checkered flag while also trying to earn the coveted title of Best Costume. (Yeah, that’s right, we race in costumes! Technically not everyone wears one, but it is strongly encouraged and appreciated.)
And what does it cost? Well, there’s a small entry fee to race (just $10), of which a significant portion is distributed to the top winner of the final race. To complete for the top prize, racers must win their heat of 3 to 4 racers so it’s both a speed and endurance event!. Best Costume winner will also receive a prize and the key to the city (ok, the key part’s not true, but it should be!). But what if you just want to bring your kids and hang out for the afternoon? The cost is zero, zip, zilch, nada, free-ninety-nine, $0. Of course donations to the HMPF, a 501C-3 charitable organization are welcome.
You can find more information and register to race at https://www.hmp500.com/ follow us on Instragram at @herronmortonplace.
HMP looks forward to seeing you there!
(Important: This event is both BYOAB (Bring Your Own Adult Beverage) and BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair) and there will likely be music and a lemonade stand at the event based on years prior.)
